The History Books Consensus Index
Which books and authors keep being recommended across 97 guides written for different subjects
This page is built by counting. Every reading guide and explainer on this site recommends books for one subject; this index reads all 97 of them (64 reading guides and 33 explainers, 542 distinct books between them) and lists the books and authors that turn up in more than one. A book recommended for the Roman Empire and again for ancient Greece was chosen twice, by two guides written at different times for different readers, and that repetition is a stronger signal than any single ranking.
59 books appear in at least two guides and 88 authors recur, either with the same book in several guides or with different books in different guides. The lists below are ranked by the number of guides, not by our opinion; the guides themselves carry the opinions, and each entry links to them.
The index is regenerated from the guide files whenever a guide is added or changed, so the counts here always match the site. Every ISBN on this page was verified in the guide it came from.

How the index is built
A script reads every guide file, takes each recommended book, matches books by main title (the part before the colon) and authors by first-named author, and counts the guides that name them. The master list, the audiobooks list and the children's list are excluded because they are themselves derived from the topic guides and would double-count. 97 guides were counted for this version.
Repetition across guides is the only signal used. It rewards the broad single-volume histories and the classic primary sources that several subjects share, and it says nothing about books that are the best on one narrow topic; those live in their own guide.

How often is it updated?
Every time a guide is added or changed, the index is regenerated from the guide files, so the counts always match what the site currently recommends.
